The publication of Radclyffe Hall’s “Well of Loneliness” sparked international scandal when the novel, with its overt themes of transgenderism and lesbianism, was put on trial for obscenity in Britain. Yet, in America, Radclyffe and her partner posed for a full spread in Vanity Fair:
